Gerritsen Beach – Tribute to Local Victims Held on 9/11 Despite Thunderstorms

September 18, 2023

Vol. 103 No. 38

Torrential rain could not stop Gerritsen Beach residents from honoring those who perished in the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers 22 years ago – or remembering the selfless first responders who died trying to save people caught in the World Trade Center.

U.S. Navy and Marine Corps officers led the march from the Argonne Marine Park American Legion Post 107 to the baseball field on Gerritsen Avenue.  To honor local victims who lost their lives, a bell rang while each person’s name was recited and roses were placed on a memorial stone.  Since 9/11/2001, many have died from 9/11-related cancers.  Those victims will not be forgotten either, including Janet Behrens who succumbed to lung cancer in 2017.
