Close to 600 residents in the East 80s section of Canarsie experienced a temporary water service disruption after NYC Department of Environmental Protection (“DEP”) crews shut down a city water main while addressing a problem near 8514 Avenue N.
According to a statement provided by a DEP spokesperson, the agency notified local elected officials at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Monday, August 10th, that crews would be responding to a water condition at the Avenue N location.
In order to complete the work, DEP shut down the city water main, initially affecting consumers on East 85th Street, between Avenues M and N, as well as Avenue N, between East 86th Street and East 80th Street.
DEP said the agency continued providing updates to elected officials and community members throughout the day as crews worked at the site.
As residents waited for service to be restored, water distribution stations were made available in the affected area, allowing residents to collect water for household needs while the shutdown remained in effect.
However, workers encountered challenges while attempting to make repairs, prompting DEP to expand the water shutdown boundaries the following morning, Tuesday, August 11th.
The disruption left additional residents on Avenue M and Seaview Avenue without normal water service while crews continued working on the damaged main.
By Tuesday afternoon, water service had been restored to affected consumers.
“Water has been restored to affected consumers in the area,” a DEP spokesperson said in a subsequent statement provided to the Canarsie Courier. “DEP will continue working to repair a damaged water main at this location.”
DEP also reported that there were no transportation impacts associated with the continuing work.
“We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation,” the spokesperson said.
