The Scott Yahney & Friends Band, newcomers to the Marine Park Summer Concert Series, brought the house down with an outstanding performance of classic hits, including R&B, disco, classic rock, soul, jazz and more at the third concert in the popular concert series, sponsored by Assemblywoman Jaime Williams, on Thursday, July 20th.
The concert, which was scheduled for Wednesday, July 19th, was postponed due to rain, and a large turnout of music lovers enjoyed listening and dancing to medleys of popular songs on a beautiful summer evening.
Yahney lives in the Mill Basin area and has been attending the Marine Park concerts for years. The talented musician has been a DJ since 1975 and started his own 10-piece wedding band in 1997. He thought it was time to bring his music to his hometown, so he put together a band/DJ hybrid, comprised of six members, just for last week’s concert.
Yahney’s surprise guest was Ilene Kristen, the famous soap opera actress who had leading roles in Ryan’s Hope and One Life to Live for many years. Kristen entertained the crowd with her own jazzy version of the Beatles’ classic song, “Can’t Buy Me Love.”
The versatile band performed everything from “Dancing Queen” and “Sweet Caroline” to Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Oh, What a Night.” Yahney ended the two-hour performance with a rousing rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” as the audience cheered and applauded with delight.

The free concerts take place on Wednesday evenings (except for August 2nd) through August 23rd at 7 p.m. on the lawn near the bocce courts.
