Faith, music and community came together, as One Brooklyn Health (OBH) hosted its 16th Annual Gospel Fest at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center on Sunday, October 18th.
The celebration, hosted by Pastor Gil Monrose and held at Brookdale’s auditorium at 555 Rockaway Parkway, highlighted the important connection between physical health, spiritual wellness and the community relationships that have supported Central Brooklyn families for generations.
For 16 years, Gospel Fest has provided an opportunity for healthcare professionals, church leaders and residents to come together outside the traditional hospital setting. The annual event celebrates the power of music and faith while strengthening the bond between OBH and the communities it serves.
One of the event’s highlights was the OBH Gospel Choir, featuring employees from the healthcare system’s three hospitals: Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, Interfaith Medical Center and Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center.
These healthcare workers are accustomed to spending their days caring for patients, supporting families and responding to medical needs. Gospel Fest offered an opportunity for them to showcase their musical talents and connect with residents in a different setting.
The program also featured local gospel artists and community choirs, reflecting the rich musical traditions and strong faith-based connections found throughout Brooklyn.
For OBH, Gospel Fest represents more than an afternoon of entertainment. It is part of the hospital system’s continuing commitment to addressing the needs of the whole person, recognizing that health and wellness extend beyond medical treatment.
Churches and faith-based organizations have historically played an important role in Central Brooklyn, providing food assistance, counseling, educational programs and other resources to families in need. By working closely with these organizations, healthcare providers can reach residents who may otherwise face barriers to accessing medical services.
Gospel Fest helps maintain those relationships while creating an atmosphere where healthcare professionals and community members can celebrate their shared commitment to wellness.
The annual celebration has also earned national recognition. OBH received a Gold Anthem Award for Community Impact, recognizing the program’s efforts to bring people together and promote health through community engagement.
The event began years ago as Unity Gospel Fest at Kingsbrook. Through the years, it evolved into a larger celebration involving employees and community partners throughout the OBH system.
The healthcare network was established to preserve and strengthen medical services in Central Brooklyn, bringing together Brookdale, Interfaith and Kingsbrook under one system.
For families living in Canarsie, Brownsville, East Flatbush and neighboring communities, these institutions have remained an important part of the local healthcare landscape.
As OBH marked another year of Gospel Fest, the celebration served as a reminder that hospitals are more than places where people receive treatment. They are also community institutions capable of bringing people together through shared experiences, culture and faith.
Sixteen years later, Gospel Fest continues to reinforce a simple message: caring for a community means supporting its physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
