In honor of Earth Week and It’s My Park season, Fresh Creek Nature Association President Maria Garrett organized her annual cleanup to beautify and restore the Fresh Creek Nature Preserve. About 10 adult volunteers, along with two children, ages 4 and 7 (Garrett’s granddaughter and grandson), pitched in on two separate cleanup dates, Thursday, April 20th and Saturday, April 22nd (Earth Day). The environmentally-conscious volunteers gathered at East 108th Street and Avenue M, and by the time the cleanup was done, the team collected over 20 bags of garbage and debris. The cleanup also came in advance of a big plant event in the Fresh Creek Preserve, scheduled for April 26th.
Garrett told the Canarsie Courier that she just doesn’t celebrate Earth Day but views all of April as “Earth Month!”
