Vol. 103 No. 40

In the treatment of patients, nurses are indispensable. Nurses are the people that patients deal with daily. They play a significant role in daily medical procedures. What would happen if this lifeline wasn’t adequately staffed and educated?

Nurses must stay current with advancements in their industry. One approach to assist them in improving their abilities is to keep them up to date on medical developments and educate them about the most recent treatments and practices in the industry.

There are many doctor of nursing leadership programs available in New York that nurses can look into if they want to further their careers.

Nursing Responsibilities

It’s difficult to list everything nursing staff are responsible for. The average day of a nurse varies based on several variables, such as;

  • The geographical area and kind of facility in which they work.
  • The number of employees and nursing personnel.
  • The people they serve.
  • Their certifications.
  • Their experience.

No matter how varied a licensed nurse’s responsibilities may be, they usually include the following tasks:

  • Evaluating, watching, and conversing with patients.
  • Keeping a record of the patient’s symptoms, medical history, and state of health.
  • Patient preparation for examinations and treatment.
  • Administering drugs and therapies, then keeping track of patients’ responses and adverse effects.
  • Collaborating with the medical staff to develop, carry out, and assess patient care plans.
  • Executing diagnostic procedures.
  • Assisting in medical operations.
  • Overseeing nursing students and nursing assistants.
  • Keeping track of and restocking inventory.

Nursing Fields

There are many nursing fields, and the nursing profession is constantly changing. The most rapidly expanding nursing specialties are:

Registered Nurse (RN)

Registered nurses (RNs) deliver and organize patient care, inform the public about various health issues, and offer patients’ families emotional support and guidance.

Cardiac Nurse

A cardiac nurse assists in surgical operations relating to heart procedures like pacemaker installations, angioplasty surgeries, or bypasses.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)

A highly skilled nurse focused on aiding with anesthesia during operations is known as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who offer direct patient care by collaborating with other nurses and personnel to raise the patient’s standard of care are known as clinical nurse specialists.

Critical Care Nurse

Registered nurses and critical care nurses have many similarities. The key distinction is that a critical care nurse has special emergency training. A critical care nurse can tend to severe wounds and monitor life support systems in challenging circumstances.

ER Nurse

After carefully assessing and stabilizing a patient, an ER nurse works with their team to complete a variety of responsibilities. An ER nurse can also treat basic injuries or illnesses.

Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

Family nurse practitioners (FNPs) specialize in providing general primary healthcare to patients of all ages. Their regular responsibilities include identifying and treating diseases, doing physical examinations, ordering diagnostic tests, and writing prescriptions.

Geriatric Nursing

A geriatric nurse is an expert in caring for older people to treat illnesses and injuries and preserve their quality of life.

Perioperative Nurse

A perioperative nurse, sometimes called a surgical assistant or an operating room (OR) nurse, concentrates on providing patients with pre and post-operative care. They prepare surgical rooms for procedures, control surgical equipment, and assist during operations.

Mental Health Nurse

Mental health nurses are experts in identifying and treating patients with psychological illnesses. Within this nursing specialty, providing counseling services is frequently another crucial responsibility.

Nurse Educator

The task of teaching nursing students about patient care falls to nurse educators. They may concentrate on certain nursing specialties or provide instruction on nursing in general.

Nurse Manager

The function of nurse managers is that of clinical supervisors. Many nurse managers are in charge of duties, including hiring nurses, organizing schedules, and making managerial and financial choices.

Nurse Midwife

A nurse midwife is an expert in treating pregnant women. Additionally, they help throughout prenatal checkups, labor, and delivery.

An Integral Part of the Medical Industry

It’s impossible to exaggerate the value of nurses. They’re essential in ensuring that patients get proper care and treatment. Nurses are crucial in ensuring everyone engaged in the healthcare process receives the best treatment possible.

Between patients and physicians, nurses serve as a liaison. Until the appropriate doctor comes, they can assist in explaining medical processes and providing emergency care. All of these justifications demonstrate how crucial nurses are to the healthcare sector.
