After an absence of many years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a celebration of the neighborhood coming back to life with the return of the Flatlands/Flatbush Community Fun Day held Saturday afternoon on the grounds of the Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church at 3931 Kings Highway.
Flatlands/Flatbush Civic Group President Sallie Bennett thanked Flatlands Reformed Church Pastor Paul Glover, his wife Jill, all those who helped and members of the committee for working tirelessly with her. “We really appreciate your service,” she said. Bennett asked for remembrance and prayers for all of the people who lost their lives due to the pandemic.
In addition to the main sponsor, Flatlands/Flatbush Civic Group, and partners including Councilwoman Farah Louis, Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein and the Flatlands Reformed Church, there were over a dozen organizations and businesses that supported and contributed to the event. Each organization had connections to the hundreds of people who showed up that day to come together as a community.
“I am celebrating all of the community that are here and that we’re all working together,” said Utica to Flatbush Initiatives President Gerard Brewster.
It was a family-oriented event with a live DJ, dancing, food and games. There was even a rock wall that the 63rd Precinct provided for the event that the Civic had been asking for over the past decade.
“This is part of our mission, in the larger vision, one community, one people, serving one God,” said Pastor Glover.
