Sanitation Museum Pop-up Opens At Floyd Bennett Field

June 18, 2022

The Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy (JBRPC) is proud to announce the opening of the Sanitation Museum Pop-up at Floyd Bennett Field, now up outside of the Ryan Visitor Center along Flatbush Avenue. A partnership between JBRPC, Gateway National Recreation Area, the Sanitation Foundation, Photoville and local author Miriam Sicherman, the pop-up celebrates sanitation in NYC through three themes: the bustling working-class community of Barren Island, the ongoing contributions of the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) and the past and future of Jamaica Bay’s sanitary landfills. The exhibit will be on display through early September.

“This exhibit is trash, in the best possible way.” said Scott Middleton, Partnership Planner at JBPRC. “JBRPC and its partners are proud to tell the hidden story of waste in New York City: Where does it go? Who are the people who keep the city clean? How did we get here and what is the future of sanitation?”

JBRPC is hosting a public opening event on June 25th at 11 a.m. The opening kickoff is free, open to the public and will feature refreshments, public remarks, access to the Ryan Visitor Center and a DSNY Touch-a-Truck event.
