Third Annual Holiday Concert and Tree Lighting — Canarsie Merchants Association

December 27, 2024

Vol. 104 No. 53

On Wednesday, December 18th, we hosted our third Annual Holiday Concert and Tree Lighting, an event that has become a tradition in our community. Despite the rain forecast, the spirit of celebration shined through, showcasing our determination to embrace the holiday season together.

We know that the holidays can be a difficult time for many, especially for those who spend them alone. We made it a point to create an inclusive atmosphere where everyone felt welcome. It’s our mission to ensure that no one feels isolated during this season of joy. Each year, we take pride in fostering a deep sense of community and connection.

Our event, which is typically held outdoors at Rockaway Parkway near Capital One, was relocated to Sylk Cove Lounge due to weather conditions. To kick off the festivities, the community was treated to hot chocolate and treats provided by Canarsie Blend, helping everyone stay warm as they enjoyed holiday music played by DJ Robert. The celebration officially began with the lighting of our Christmas tree, set up by Julian and Dimeitre from PaleFo Cinema.

Following the tree lighting, we had a performance from Jaethea Jackson who is from the P.S. 276 Girl Scouts. This was followed by a reading of the Birth of Christ by Victoria and a prayer about hope and peace from Pastor Mullery of Beraca Baptist Church. Sandy from State Senator Roxanne Persaud’s office brought greetings along with Councilwoman Mercedes Narcisse. Sixty-ninth Precinct Officers Thompson and Maria gave greetings to the community.

Attendees were then invited to savor a “Taste of Canarsie,” featuring delicious offerings from Golden Krust, including three different types of soups, and Steph’s Cake Shop provided bite-sized pastries.

The event concluded with the much-anticipated gift distribution. A huge thank you to Councilwoman Narcisse for generously providing the gifts, ensuring that the community was able to share in the holiday spirit. We were able to provide the community with 176 gift bags filled with warm-weather accessories, books and toys.

Thank you to The Flossy Organization, Resilient Young Minds, Jennifer from LEAD’N, the merchants, community and the volunteers for their time, effort and support in making this event a success.
