The spring season at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition continues, with four new art exhibitions that push the natural world to the forefront, bursting forth on Saturday, June 7th:
• Fungi
• Biophilia
• Creating With Sustainability
• New Yorkers Capturing Nature
Fungi, an international juried exhibition in cooperation with Brooklyn Mushroom, focuses on the mycological.
One of the most mysterious, least understood realms of biology, fungi hold the power to sustain, influence and even kill us. This show brings together a wide variety of creative expressions, in all media, inspired by the enigmatic world of mushrooms. Brooklyn Mushroom is an experiment in mushroom culture and mischief. They host educational, cultural, artistic and social mushroom events with the goal of creating a fungi community nationally.
Biophilia is a national juried show that investigates the natural world through art. From the canopy of the forest to the carpet of organic matter beneath our feet, the tapestry our biosphere weaves around us has always been the raw material for the artist. This exhibition explores the beauty and pleasures found in nature — delicate or untamed, fleeting or enduring, organic life connects us all.
Creating With Sustainability is the theme of 2025’s second BWAC members exhibition. Artist members have incorporated repurposed and recycled materials in their work. This show examines themes of ecological responsibility, reuse, and upcycling a range of elements, including found objects, recycled media and reclaimed resources. Presented in cooperation with Materials for the Arts (MFTA), a NYC nonprofit that provides arts nonprofits, public schools and city agencies with access to free materials.
Also on view, BWAC hosts an exhibition titled New Yorkers Capturing Nature. This special presentation by Sierra Photo NYC is a photography exhibit that highlights the thriving natural world within the five boroughs of New York City. Sierra Photo NYC is a group within the New York City Sierra Club which brings together nature photographers and enthusiasts who support the Club’s environmental goals. The show can be found in the second floor café area. All four shows open Saturday, June 7, and will remain on display through Sunday, June 29, each weekend between the hours of 1 to 6pm, at the BWAC Gallery, housed in the historic Beard and Robinson Stores at 481 Van Brunt St. in Red Hook, Brooklyn
