Spring is here, and it’s time for New Yorkers to embrace spring cleaning, air their grievances and get a free health checkup.
On Saturday afternoon, residents took part in the Congress on Your Corner, Health Fair and Spring Cleaning Shredding Event, hosted in collaboration with Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, State Senator Roxanne Persaud and Assemblywoman Jaime Williams.
The event, which was held in the parking lot of Holy Family Church, 9719 Flatlands Avenue, was to ensure assistance to the community and provide an eco-friendly and secure method of getting rid of personal and important waste.
Residents were able to safely dispose of confidential documents, check their blood pressure, secure personal protective equipment and acquire self-tests for COVID-19 at the multipurpose event.
“I came because I have two girls who are back from college and they’re home with me,” said Aleena Hawkins. “I wanted to secure some instant COVID testing kits, medical supplies, check my blood pressure and support Rep. Jeffries.”
“I know the pandemic has hit the community hard and in partnership with my colleagues and government, we want to continue to be here to help people get through this storm and emerge stronger on the other side,” said Jeffries. “The Canarsie community is strong. It’s resilient; we’re compassionate and we’re going to continue to be here for each other through the trials and tribulations of life.”
