Friends, family and officers of the 63rd Precinct gathered on Saturday, October 22nd to celebrate the life of an officer who was killed in the line of duty by dedicating a street in his honor.
The street co-naming ceremony was held at the corner of Brooklyn Avenue and Avenue J, on the 50th anniversary of the death of Police Officer Joseph Meaders, who served with the NYPD for 17 years. The intersection of Brooklyn Avenue and Avenue J, dedicated as “Police Officer Joseph C Meaders Avenue” is just steps from the 63rd Precinct.
Meaders was killed in 1972 at the corner of East 56th Street and Avenue U after he was struck by an oil truck.
