Senator Persaud Presents $250,000 Grant to Canarsie Educational Campus

September 30, 2024

Vol. 104 No. 41

On Friday, September 13th, State Senator Roxanne Persaud presented a $250,000 check to NYC Department of Education Canarsie Educational Campus administrators. The check presentation occurred before the Canarsie vs. Lincoln varsity football kickoff at 1600 Rockaway Parkway. It provided an exciting opportunity for the school community to celebrate this milestone together.

The grant, awarded by Senator Persaud in February 2024, is part of the New York State Community Resiliency, Economic Sustainability and Technology Program (CREST). This funding upgraded the sports field lighting at the Canarsie Educational Campus, ensuring state-of-the-art illumination for competitive sports and field events.

“This significant investment in our community reflects our commitment to enhancing facilities that support the athletic and academic success of our students,” Persaud said. “The upgraded lighting will improve the safety and quality of field events and provide more opportunities for students to excel in sports.”

“Everyone – students, staff, families and especially our players – at the Canarsie Campus is excited to have these stadium lights.  The lights elevate the quality of the field and allow us to see its beauty at night and increase visibility and safety for all our players and the Canarsie community.  We are very thankful to Senator Persaud for her continued support of the community, and we hope to see her at many home games,” Principal Adaleza J. Michelena said.

The $250,000 grant is one of 41 capital grants awarded by Senator Persaud to public schools within Senate District 19, totaling over $5.5 million. Her grants aim to bolster local schools’ infrastructure and learning spaces, fostering a supportive environment for student development and community engagement.
