The frigid temperatures that blanketed the community on Thursday, January 16th, were not sufficient to deter parents from attending their children’s dance performance, held in the auditorium of P.S. 115 The Daniel Mucatel School, located at 1500 East 92nd Street.
Decked out in colorful, glittery costumes, the 2nd- and 3rd-graders performed a number of dance routines under the guidance of their teacher and dance instructor, Alyssa Infranco. The opening act was a tap dance in which the group emulated some steps made famous by the legendary duo, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
The students performed other equally riveting routines such as Latin bachata, swing dance, hip hop and an African dance which was described as a “celebration of history, unity and joy” by one of the young dancers who read from a prepared script.
Another student read an explanation of their dancing experience: “Learning to dance was not just about mastering the steps but also embracing the rhythm and connection that dance brings. Throughout dance this year, we learned basic steps as well as more challenging ones. We learned to work with a partner to improve our coordination as well as our confidence.”
“They learned the importance of performance prep, costuming, rehearsal, so it’s teaching them more about professional dancing,” Infranco added.
