On Saturday, February 28th, Marine Park JHS 278, at 1925 Stuart Street, held its annual Pinebox Derby Car Race, with more than 80 students competing as parents, teachers and community members cheered them on.
Principal Kerri Moser described the event as a “transdisciplinary activity” where students enjoyed a carnival-like atmosphere featuring the race, along with face painting, games and blue-caramel popcorn.
STEM teacher Michael Young noted that the hands-on activity helped students learn about weights and measures, as well as potential and kinetic energy, force, momentum, velocity and acceleration — what he calls “math-in-motion.”
Race winners were Kristan Kusek (1st Place), Jonathan Moilen (2nd Place), and Ramone Uktamaov (3rd Place).
Congratulations to the winners and all the students who participated in this exciting and educational event.
