The annual street fair hosted by the Hebrew Educational Society (H.E.S.) on June 1st, was nothing short of spectacular. Hundreds of parents and children of all ages turned out for the Sunday afternoon extravaganza which was packed with fun and activities for the entire family.
While some of the children got creative with various arts and crafts projects, others enjoyed playing exciting games such as “Ring A Bottle,” “Tic Tac Toe” and “Krazy Kans,” which allowed them to earn prizes if they won. Squeals of delight were heard from those who opted for a tumble in the bouncy house or coast down the slides and rides at the “amusement park.”
The “Day of Entertainment” also included basketball tryouts, karate demonstrations and dance routines such as family Zumba, which had adults and children alike shaking it up, which was probably not a bad idea, considering the liberal number of hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, cotton candy, popcorn and other snacks readily available.
Many of the activities showcased at the fair were extensions of programs offered regularly at the H.E.S. Staff members operated several information booths that were placed outside of 9502 Seaview Avenue, as well as interspersed along the street. They shared information about additional resources available at H.E.S., including assistance accessing SNAP, the upcoming “Empowered Support Series” and community food pantry, which is open four days a week and offered in partnership with Met Council.
Resource materials and other information were also available at the booths of local elected officials, Canarsie Merchants Association and Bright Starts whose members also gave away free t-shirts.
