Councilwoman Mercedes Narcisse and environmental organization NYC H2O jointly held a cleanup event at Canarsie Park, located at the corner of Seaview and Remsen Avenues, on Saturday, May 13th.
Members of NYC H2O and the Brooklyn Solid Waste Advisory Board (SWAB), volunteers and Narcisse’s Chief of Staff Saye Joseph picked up trash from the park’s beach and one of the nature trails. The participants collected garbage using grabbers and gloves over a two-hour period.
NYC H2O Executive Director and Founder Matt Malina said that the cleanup along the shoreline and inside Canarsie Park will make the area more inviting for parkgoers and for the students that they bring to the park.
The group collected more than 20 bags worth of litter and a shopping cart full of large, discarded items. Used needles were also safely disposed of.
While the volunteers couldn’t collect all the trash in the park, they did make a dent in it. They also hoped to set a good example for other park visitors.
