A new fall season begins at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) in Red Hook with three new art exhibitions opening Saturday, September 13.
- Aerosol Euphoria: Urban Street Art
- The Art of the NuYoRICAN Soul
- Brooklyn Resilience
Aerosol Euphoria: Urban Street Art, is a national juried show celebrating street art as a medium of liberation and cultural storytelling. While graffiti has been a preferred medium of urban youth culture for a half century now, this exhibit seeks to expand the spectrum of expression from spray paint to all media that testifies to the spirit and the rhythm of the street.
The Art of the NuYoRICAN Soul is a celebration of Culture, Resistance and Rhythm. This national juried show features original works by contemporary NuYoRICAN artists. Bold and vibrant, it honors the voices and spirit of Puerto Rican communities in New York City.
Brooklyn Resilience is the theme of this autumn’s BWAC members exhibition. Since the 1990s, BWAC has been a mainstay of the Red Hook community, and remains strong today, in no small part due to the resilience of the artists. Member artists are exhibiting artwork that responds to what makes them resilient, in their practice and more broadly, their lives. The results are wide-ranging and fascinating to explore.
All three exhibitions open Saturday, September 13, and will remain on display through Sunday, October 12, each weekend between the hours of 1 to 6pm, at the BWAC Gallery, housed in the historic Beard and Robinson Stores warehouse at 481 Van Brunt St. in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
Red Hook Open Studios
This fall marks the 10 year anniversary of Red Hook Open Studios, and BWAC will once again be taking part. In addition to the regular Red Hook Open Studios weekend on October 11 and 12, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition has invited more than a dozen Red Hook artists who do not have studio space that can be opened to the public, to exhibit in the gallery for the duration of the Fall 1 exhibitions, September 13 through October 12. In October, you’ll find BWAC on the RHOS map atwww.redhookopenstudios.com.
About BWAC
The BWAC gallery occupies two floors of the Beard and Robinson Stores, a massive Civil War-era warehouse serving the Erie Basin, an important shipping hub on the Red Hook waterfront which helped transform New York into an industrial powerhouse in the 19th century. The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) is an artist-run organization and an incorporated 501(c)(3) nonprofit, operating the BWAC Gallery. For 47 years, BWAC has been exhibiting the artwork of local and national artists with seasonal exhibits that include national juried and local member shows. These exhibitions present a wide variety of contemporary visual arts from the traditional to the experimental cutting edge. The BWAC Gallery, 481 Van Brunt St., Red Hook, Brooklyn 11231, receives generous support from the O’Connell Organization and its many members and friends.
