America’s Food Basket supermarket opened its doors in Canarsie, offering residents a wide variety of food and household products at competitive prices. The store, which is located at 1380 Rockaway Pkwy, is family-owned.
The grand opening on Saturday, August 5th, which started at 12 p.m. and lasted until 4 p.m., was a festive event, with live music, a local marching band, food samples from the store’s deli and bakery, and giveaways. There was also face painting for the kids and balloon figures.
State Senator Roxanne Persaud was on hand to cut the ribbon, and she praised the owners for their investment in the community.
“This is a great day for our community,” Persaud said. “This new supermarket will provide our residents with a convenient and affordable place to shop for their groceries.”
The first 100 customers received a free gift basket filled with products from the store. There was also a raffle of surprise gifts including bikes, grills, etc.
America’s Food Basket is a member of the Canarsie Merchants Association, founded by Norine Medas, who has been instrumental in helping Canarsie see a resurgence in local businesses. This is the third opening of a new business in Canarsie since October 2022. Mark Caserta, Vice President of Small Business Support, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, presented a plaque with a map of Brooklyn to welcome the new business to Canarsie.
The store is open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. It offers a wide variety of fresh produce, meats, seafood, baked goods, dairy products and frozen foods. There is also a large selection of household products, including cleaning supplies, personal care items and pet supplies.
The owners, Andres Ferreira and Andie Ferreira, are committed to providing their customers with a friendly and welcoming shopping experience. Manuel Sosa, Director of Operations, said, “We are committed in the long run to be involved in the community.”
America’s Food Basket is also committed to giving back to the community. The store plans to host regular Customer Appreciation Day every year.
