Light Voter Turnout for Primary Day

July 3, 2023

Voter turnout was low for the City Council race, as Kings County had only four contested elections in this year’s Primary Election, held on Tuesday, June 27th. Early voting started on Saturday, June 17th and ran for nine days through Sunday, June 25th.

Councilwoman Mercedes Narcisse will be the Democratic nominee for City Council in the November election.  The incumbent, elected in 2021, ran uncontested in District 46, which covers Canarsie and most of southeastern Brooklyn.  District 45’s Councilwoman Farah Louis (Democrat) will run in November; her primary was also uncontested.  District 45 covers Flatbush, East Flatbush, Flatlands and Marine Park.

In East New York’s District 42, longtime incumbent Councilman Charles Barron (Democrat) lost his seat to Chris Banks, an advocate with strong union backing.  Barron was elected to City Council in 2001.

In the 48th Council District, representing Sheepshead Bay, Republican incumbent Inna Vernikov beat Igor Kazatsker, winning over 70% of the vote.

Democrat Linda Wilson won the primary nomination for Civil Court Judge in Kings County against Turquoise Haskins, endorsed by the Thomas Jefferson Club.  Haskins won 59% of the vote in Assembly District 59, the only district in Brooklyn where she won. According to District Leader Frank Seddio, “This was the result of the hard work and cooperation received from our elected officials, [TJ] club members and all who have joined with us to achieve success on her behalf.”

Election Day is Tuesday, November 7, 2023.  Early voting runs from October 28 to November 5, 2023.
