Marine Park Alliance (MPA) has been awarded a $75,000 grant through the Hudson River Foundation’s (HRF) “Advancing Habitat Restoration with Community” initiative to develop a community-driven restoration framework for Marine Park.
According to the April 30th award announcement, the project will guide future restoration of wetlands, shorelines and maritime habitats, strengthening ecological resilience and expanding access to nature for surrounding communities.
Funding will be used to “identify 5-10 priority restoration opportunities, develop early-stage designs and lay the groundwork for future capital investment.”
Previous restoration efforts included work by NYC Parks, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Natural Areas Conservancy.
In its May newsletter, MPA announced that this is the largest grant in the organization’s history. “This investment supports a community-driven approach to restoring salt marsh and upland habitats in Brooklyn’s biggest park,” MPA Executive Director Scott Middleton said in a social media post.
The award originated from the NY-NJ Harbor & Estuary Program, funded by the Environmental Protection Agency and hosted by the HRF. MPA was one of three grantees to receive one of three new grants totaling $260,000.
