Marine Park Alliance’s annual Festival of Lights series continued on Saturday, December 13th, with Kwanzaa Drumming at the Carmine Carro Community Center, at 3000 Fillmore Avenue.
Local families and MPA’s Teen Leaders joined together to use conga, djembe and shakers to celebrate Kuumba (Creativity) – one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa – with the Cumbe Center for African and Diaspora Dance. Participants learned the language of drumming (bass, tone and slap!) with Brooklyn-born African drum instructors Olatunji Ojore and Ryan Greenidge.
The immersive, rhythmically rich experience inspired creativity, joy and connection to the diverse sounds of the African diaspora.
