Saturday Stop ‘N’ Swap At Canarsie Library

July 2, 2022

Collectibles, clothing, entertainment and household goods galore! No, this wasn’t the scene of a fancy flea market or antique show out in the suburbs – this was a quaint freebie event right in Canarsie at the local library where residents dropped off gently used items for the city’s Stop ‘N’ Swap program. The program, part of the NYC Sanitation Department’s Grow NYC initiative, kicked off in 2008 and spans all five boroughs at various locations. At Canarsie Library on Saturday, June 25th, representatives had tables to display gently donated goods – including electronics, clothes, CDs, DVDs and even jewelry. Residents could also take home whatever interested them among the random goodies. Officials at the event, which was held for the first time at the local branch, 1580 Rockaway Parkway, told the Canarsie Courier that the goal of the program is to get people to “reuse and recycle” items around their home. The program’s aim is to create what reps call a “wishcycle” – one the goals of which is bringing in something old and getting something they’ve always wanted that’s “new.” The agency operates the program at local parks, schools and libraries through a generous grant also supporting the “Zero Waste” initiative.
